Desert Oasis by AlvinHew Desert Oasis by AlvinHew
I've always found the idea of a desert oasis appealing. The concept of a nourishing pool of life-giving water located right in the middle of a nigh unlivable environment of scorching sand is a juxtaposition that I like a lot.

That's good; I can't tell you how many times I've ended up drinking sand.

Ahh this is an excellent piece! I love the technique you used to color it, it makes the rocks look really textured and the water so refreshing~ <3

I know this is going to sound like a weird question, but would you possibly allow me to use this image as a non-profit website banner? I'd be sure to credit you, and even have a link back to this page if you wanted!

Sure, I'm always happy to let people use my art for non profit projects as long as they credit me. Don't forget to link me your site so I can see it! =)

Also, sorry for the late response.

This looks really nice :-) Are you influenced by Avatar?

I would not consider either the movie Avatar or the cartoon series Avatar a big influence on my work, no. But I do love the cartoon series very much. And I have yet to see the movie (blasphemy, I know, sorry).

lol, yeah, I meant the series. This picture just reminded me of it a little. You should be creating the backgrounds for the next one ;-) :D

Btw, "The Last Airbender" was horrible. Don't waste your time or money trying to see it. "Avatar" was great though :-)

Yeah I heard nothing by terrible things about The Last Airbender. I chose not to see it because I could tell from the trailer that it wasn't going to be very good.

lol, lucky you. I, of course, was utterly fooled. :P The acting was terrible and the story progressed way too fast. I mean, I understand they were trying to fit 20 episodes of a season into one two-hour movie, but still -_- Although, the scene where Zhao dies was pretty cool. :D

On a related note, did you ever follow tutorials on how to color like this?
Because I`m looking into it, and cant really find clear explanations on things

There are tons of tutorials out there, but for me, I personally like to figure it out myself. I tend to improve faster when I just sit down and paint from photos and try to figure it out.

This is lovely! It has a really nice calm and peaceful atmosphere about it :) I do like other people's suggestions of maybe adding a few fish or birds in there as well, as (in my opinion) it would add a little more life to the scene. However, I do think it works very well just as it is :D

WOOHOO, awesome composition and colors! 'd like a suggestion? Blending the elements as they get farther, so the contrast when reaching the sky layer won't be so strong.
Congratz for the piece. x)

This is gorgeous, what kind of brush do you use for those rocks?

And I agree that maybe adding some small shadows of some fish or some
other kind of aquatic creature under the water would look really nice c:

To be honest, I just used the round brush. It's kind of tedious but oh well.

Thanks for you comment and suggestion!

Good to know c: I usually just stick to a round hard or soft brush but you make
your environments look so dynamic so I was curious if you used anything else haha.

Your welcome, keep up the fantastic work. (:

I like it alot! reminds me of stillscreens from the NES era but ofcourse with better quality. I think a little waterfall would really hit the spot, perhaps some animals too....what do you think? :)

Those are good ideas!

I thought of putting in a waterfall, but I had put in a couple waterfalls for another painting I had done, called Seafoam Sanctuary. Since both of these areas take place in the same world, and are relatively close to each other, I thought it would be better not to have waterfalls in both areas, for variety sake. I don't mind repeating elements like palm trees, though, because it makes sense for them to be everywhere when it comes to desert/tropical areas. This sentiment is definitely subject to change, though. =)

As for animals, I'm not sure what I want the animals in this world to look like yet. Maybe they'll look similar to the creatures we have here on present-day Earth, or maybe they'll deviate a lot in appearance. I'm developing the world slowly but surely, so I'll eventually get around to conceptualizing the creatures.

So its not of this earth? if so, then maybe you should try to design your own trees and vegetables?
if thats too much, how about just something glimmering under the water surface then indicating on fishes or something? :)

Yeah for sure, I want to create different types of plants and trees in the future. Though, it's not an alien planet or anything, think of it more like a fantasy world where there are just as many things that are similar to Earth as we know it as there are things that are different.

You've given me a lot of good things to think about, haha. Up to this point I've concentrated mostly on creating the landscapes upon which my creatures and characters will traverse, but not too much of what the denizens of this place will actually look like. Ah well, slowly but surely...

Thanks for your thoughts!
